Biography

Colin McInnes is currently Deputy Director at Moredun. Colin moved to Moredun over 20 years ago from Glasgow University where he had obtained his PhD. He joined a group working to develop techniques and reagents to study the ovine immune response to infection. In 2003 he became a principal research scientist at Moredun specialising in parapoxvirus infections of ruminants and wildlife. His group was the first to characterise the poxvirus responsible for the deaths of red squirrels, a major contributory factor in their decline within the UK.

Current Research

  • Developing better diagnostics and control measures for parapoxvirus infections of livestock
  • Understanding the epidemiology of squirrelpox virus infection in grey squirrels
  • Investigating the feasibility of producing a vaccine against squirrelpox virus in order to protect red squirrels
