A new, purpose built, dairy facility has been added to the Moredun Bioservices animal facilities. The facility extends the available capacity for studies to test novel and enhanced vaccines and therapeutic products in lactating dairy cattle.
The main use of the facility will be to test the efficacy of candidate vaccines and therapeutics for the prevention and control of mastitis which remains the most costly disease impacting the dairy industry. The disease can be caused by a wide range of organisms, Moredun Scientific have established challenge models for the major mastitis pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus uberis which will be used for efficacy studies in the new unit.
Researchers at the Moredun Research Institute will also benefit from the facility to support their mastitis vaccine research projects
