Scientific Apprentice/Laboratory Technician

The Moredun Group are seeking an enthusiastic and conscientious individual to join us as a Life Sciences Modern Apprentice over a 3-year period. The successful candidate will be based at Moredun Research Institute and have at least 1 Higher Grade in Maths and/or Science and a National 5 qualification in English.

The Moredun Group consists of three core companies, the Moredun Research Institute, Moredun Scientific and Pentlands Science Park. Facilities include a flow cytometry unit, a proteomics unit, pathology support and extensive large and small animal facilities including biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) large animal capacity. We are located in the Midlothian Science Triangle, together with University of Edinburgh, the Roslin Institute, the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, and the Centre for Infectious Diseases, the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health, Scotland’s Rural College and the Scottish Agricultural College. This has become a world class and highly interactive environment for innovative research in veterinary medicine.

During the apprenticeship, you will be trained and supported to become competent in the following areas: • To study for and obtain an SVQ in Laboratory Skills (Life Science) at SCQF level 7 • Preparing Reagents • Amplifying and analysing DNA or RNA Samples using PCR or qPCR • Analysis of DNA using Gel Electrophoresis • Maintaining Cell Lines • Operating in a Clean Room or Aseptic Environment • Preparing Biological Specimens or Samples for investigation • Develop technical skills and knowledge through the apprenticeship programme with the support of an assessor and/or college.
