The Moredun Foundation

The Moredun Foundation is a registered charity that exists to promote the highest possible standards for animal health and welfare through research and education.

Formed by farmers in 1920, it is dedicated to a simple belief that the greatest benefit to animal welfare is the cure or prevention of disease.

The Foundation supports a broad and varied range of research initiatives within the Moredun Research Institute, and is dedicated to improving the understanding, treatment and prevention of diseases. The Foundation therefore develops a variety of outreach programmes for farmers, vets and the general public. These projects support education and boost public awareness of a range of animal health issues, especially those which may have an impact on human health.

The outstanding progress the Moredun Foundation has made in animal health over the last 80 years has not come cheaply. More than 200 staff are employed by Moredun, at a cost of over £10 million per year. Research, development and testing of a new treatment or vaccine can take 10-15 years to bring to the market and a development cost of £10 million pounds is not uncommon. However, as government funding now only contributes to just over 50% of Moredun Research Institute's income (the Moredun Foundation does not receive any Government funding) we find ourselves even more dependant on financial help from our supporters so that vital areas of our work can continue.
